Ninpo wikipedia entry

Wikipedia currently conflates the terms "ninpo" and "ninjutsu" [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninjutsu ] however many contemporary teachers of the art distinguish in a way that places ninpo in the realm of the mind and spirit, while ninjutsu's chief concern is in the world of the physical.

Shidoshi Glenn Morris [ hoshin.com ], in his "Shadow Strategies of an Amercian Ninja Master" claims that ninpo has its roots in Taoist China while in Japan it is associated with two Buddhist sects: Tendai Mikkyo (Vajrayana) and Shingon. It is also associated with the ancient indigenous religions of Shugendo (mountain mystics) and with Shinto (the Way [Tao] of the Gods [spirit, energy, or heart], or spirit sword, or spirit in China), which is Japan's indigenous religion.

This is intended to start some discussion with the goal of developing a separate wikipedia entry for ninpo.

what is the wikipedia? sorry i'm not familiar.

i must admit that i'm not well-versed in ninpo; in fact it is a pretty new concept to me. i am here to learn, and would appreciate transcription of texts that detail the strategies mentioned in the tribe's title bar (i guess that's a different topic).

turn me on to some reading and i bet i'll dredge up some definitive inspiration on this.

    thanx

A wiki is a website running special software that allows anyone to edits pages and keeps track of all the versions that each page goes through. Wikipedia is a special site that bills itself as the "Free Encyclopedia". Basically it's an attempt to provide a free alternative to services like Encyclopedia Britannica. It now contains almost 400,000 articles in many different languages. It's one of the great web success stories, IMHO. Check it out...

I agree that they should be seperate categories. In fact, I believe the Bujinkan organization would prefer to not even have the word ninjutsu associated with them anymore, but thats a whole debate there.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the Ninjutsu training in Bujinkan. I love the art and train when I can but all the cool stuff that was introduced by Shidoshi Hayes has been pruned from the art. I'm talking about the actual Shinobi stuff. The only way I learned a lot of the stealth and such was because my old instructor was ex-SAS so he taught the shadow stuff, not just the Taijutsu. Perhaps the shadow stuff is taught at the higher ranks? One of the reasons I prefer Shidoshi Morris's approach is that he present everything out in the open and isn't afraid to discuss the shadow side of the art.

What this has to do with the wikipedia entry I don't know. :-)

    Cheers,

You are correct, Tenguka. Ninpo is a bit of a self-weeding process that requires diligence and patience to master. When one starts, they begin with the basics of taijutsu. Strengh and flexibility training are crucial, as well as the development of sound judgement and control. We get way too many Sho Kusugi wannabes wandering in, wondering when they were gonna get to become deadly, silent assassins.

Because the techniques one learns in Bujinkan are dangerous enough in skilled hands, the more esoteric techniques are reserved for those in higher ranks. I think this this seriously cuts down on the "kobra kai" mentality that seems to be pervasive throughout the "martial sports" community, which Bujinkan has never been a part of, and occasionaly breezes through many dojos.

lol, "Kobra kai". Haven't heard that one in a while, but yes you are right. In the old dojo I trained in we used to get all sorts of sho kusugi wannabes. We always had a core group of us who stuck to the training and our instructor would show us some of the shadow elements but the wannabes just disappeared after a while. I still thinks it's a shame that the art has been watered down so much but I suppose with all the nut jobs in the world it had to be.

        Do you still train?
